Winter holidays in the Lungau region
When winter makes its appearance in Lungau, the entire region gains an extraordinary new flair.
Thanks to the high elevation, natural snow is still in abundance here. The temperatures drop below freezing, on some days, far below. But the cold is always somehow quite pleasant – and if you wrap yourself in a snug pullover and down jacket, sporting a scarf, gloves and well-lined winter boots, you will truly be able to enjoy winter in Lungau.
Skiing and snowboarding between Katschberg and Obertauern
In winter, skiing is definitely the number one sport in our region. A wide selection of ski areas offer you multiple possibilities. The valley station of the Sonnenbahn is virtually at the doorstep of the Mentenwirt – the gondola that will carry you right into the heart of the Speiereck-Großeck ski area. When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, we also highly recommend the pistes of Aineck-Katschberg, just a few kilometers away (free ski bus, a stop for all ski buses is located on the car park directly in front of the Mentenwirt in St. Martin). And since we are on the topic of skiing in Lungau, we can’t fail to mention the Fanningberg family ski area as well as the Obertauern ski paradise.
Experience nature as you go ski touring, cross-country skiing and winter hiking
If you are in the mood for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, much of the time you can simply head to the surrounding hills. But if ever Old Man Winter neglects his job, you might decide to explore the Katschberg Region, Bundschuh-Schönfeld-Innerkrems or the Prebersee near Tamsweg.
You will be able to keep active practically all winter long. Touring skiers have a wide selection of alpine tours to choose from. Ice skating and ice stock (at the sports grounds in St. Michael), sleigh rides and winter horseback riding (at the Lankmayer riding stables in Mariapfarr), or simply enjoying the winter landscapes while you are out on a leisurely stroll: In Lungau, there are literally no limits to the magical activities you can enjoy during the winter months.
